Led to Christ by ISIS

I pass along to you an amazing story by Yuliya Talmazan of NBC News about how ISIS is – inadvertently – leading Syrian Muslims to Christ.  Praise God!

“Four years have passed since the Islamic State group’s fighters were run out of Kobani, a strategic city on the Syrian-Turkish border [northeast of Aleppo], but the militants’ violent and extreme interpretation of Islam has left some questioning their faith.

A new church is attracting converts.  It is the first local Christian place of worship for decades.

‘If ISIS represents Islam, I don’t want to be a Muslim anymore,’ Farhad Jasim, 23, who attends the Church of the Brethren, told NBC News.  ‘Their God is not my God.’

Religious conversions are rare and taboo in Syria, with those who abandon Islam often ostracized by their families and communities.

‘Even under the Syrian regime before the revolution, it was strictly forbidden to change religion from Islam to Christianity or the opposite,’ said Omar, 38, who serves as an administrator at the Protestant church.  (He asked for his last name not to be revealed for safety reasons.  The church’s priest declined to be interviewed.)

‘Changing your religion under ISIS wasn’t even imaginable.  ISIS would kill you immediately,’ he added.

While residents are still dealing with the emotional scars left by the brutality of ISIS, Omar says many people in Kobani have been open-minded about Christianity…”[Continued at https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/life-under-isis-led-these-muslims-christ-n963281. ]

  1. Thanks for sharing Anna. Adversity can serve to bring us to Christ and we are seeing that confirmed here. I pray Christianity thrives in Syria.

  2. What an incredible testament to the power of the Gospel that even in the midst of such extreme militant brutality, God is still drawing those who hunger for Him! We serve an awesome God!

  3. Praise God!

  6. In a free society, we are free to change our mind.

  7. This give me a lot of hope. You may have heard of the recent bombings in Sri Lanka – confirmed to have been perpetrated by ISIS recruits. Have been praying that my land won’t lose anymore youth to this evil ideology. Now I have another hope that he will turn back those who have strayed. Thank you. !! What a way God works to bring persons to him !!

    • The bombings in Sri Lanka were tragic. I understand that more are feared. But God works in mysterious ways. The early Christian author Tertullian said, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” Without martyrdom, the church would not have spread to China or Burma. We follow in the Lord’s footsteps.

      • Absolutely!! ..
Yes .. more are feared but the forces are doing a great job of trying to root out the radicals.
It really is a trying time because all your instinct is to seethe with anger, but a video of the Negombo suicide bomber tousling the head of a little girl who stepped in front of him when he was making his way to the church haunts me. His humanity slipped through the iron resolve and zombie like actions.
I’ve posted about it (Sri Lanka I cry for you.) We need to step up the prayers that ISIS will not snatch the youth and brainwash them with their evil ideology.

      • I agree. Prayer may be our most powerful weapon against such evil.

      • PS … I shared your post on my site …

      • Thank you so much!
